Police: Couple left toddler in SUV while they visited Harlingen bar

HARLINGEN — Harlingen police arrested a man and a woman for allegedly abandoning a toddler in a car while they were inside a bar.

Police were called just before 11:30 Saturday night to the 600 block of N. Ed Carey Drive about a child left unattended inside a Black Jeep Cherokee in the parking lot.

Officers found the two-year-old girl inside the SUV and then located Bonnie Jean Rodman, 32,of Pharr, and Shay Eric Williams, 40, of San Benito, inside the Tipsy Tavern Bar.

Police said Rodman and Williams had custody of the child and left her inside the Jeep while they were inside the bar.

Both were arrested and charged with public intoxication and abandoning and endangering a child with intent to return.

The child was released unharmed to her grandmother and Child Protective Services was notified.
